I\u2019m not saying you can\u2019t stream your favorite Netflix show but living a sedentary life is not healthy. Find out below some of the best reasons walking can help improve your health and your life. 1. Doesn\u2019t require special equipment.<\/strong> Walking is one of the cheapest, easiest, and accessible forms of exercise. All you need to do is step out the front door and start walking down the sidewalk or street. If the weather is too hot or too cold, you can walk on an indoor treadmill or in a mall. But there\u2019s nothing like walking in beautiful weather either listening to nature or your favorite music or podcasts to get you motivated to keep moving.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

2. One of the easiest ways to get more active.<\/strong> Because it is easy to walk out the front door and start  walking, it makes it the easiest way to get more active. You can even park further away at your local grocery store to increase your steps. Try wearing a fitness tracker and you may see your physical activity increase. 3. Reduces symptoms of depression and anxiety.<\/strong> Walking daily has been known to reduce symptoms of depression and anxiety and contribute to overall mental, emotional, and physical well-being.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

4. Helps with weight management.<\/strong> Walking is a great form of exercise to burn calories. It\u2019s easy on the joints and fun to do with friends. Whether your goal is weight management or to lose weight, plug your earphones in and start walking to your favorite tunes.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

5. It\u2019s accessible to everyone.<\/strong> No special equipment needed to walk out your front door. I have no space for a treadmill in my home so it\u2019s more affordable for me to walk out the front door. Sometimes I bring my dog with me for added enjoyment.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

6. It\u2019s low impact exercise.<\/strong> Walking is a great exercise that is easy on the joints and helps improve circulation. No matter your age, walking is necessary for everyday life. For those of us who have bad knees or arthritic joints, walking is a great low impact exercise that will help improve circulation and muscle strength.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

7. Lowers low density Lipoproteins (LDL aka the \u201cbad cholesterol\u201d).<\/strong> Studies<\/a> have shown LDL can be reduced with regular exercise.  <\/p>\n\n\n\n

8. Raises high density Lipoproteins (HDL aka the \u201cgood cholesterol\u201d). <\/strong>HDL <\/a>is directly linked to increase in aerobic exercise. But you don\u2019t have to run or walk super-fast to get a benefit. Walking frequently during the day will help increase your HDL. The American Heart Association<\/a> (Heart.org) recommends 150 minutes of brisk exercise weekly. This can be broken down into 30-minute walks 5x a week. Feel free to walk more if you are having so much fun doing it!<\/p>\n\n\n\n

9. Lowers blood pressure. <\/strong> Walking helps to improve our circulation and can help us maintain and improve our blood pressure.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

10. Reduces the risk of abnormal cell growth. <\/strong>Science News<\/a> recently reported a study from Karolinska Institutet dated October 26, 2020, that exercise can change \u201c\u2026the metabolism of the immune system\u2019s cytotoxic T cells and thereby improves their ability to attack cancer cells.\u201d  Helene Rundqvist, senior researcher at the Department of Laboratory Medicine, Karolinska Institutet reported \u201cOur research shows that exercise affects the production of several molecules and metabolites that activate cancer-fighting immune cells and thereby inhibit cancer growth.\u201d   <\/p>\n\n\n\n

11.  Helps reduce risk and aids with the management of type 2 diabetes. <\/strong>A recent study published in Diabetesjournals.org<\/a> highlighted the benefits of increasing daily steps taken with a direct correlation to a lower risk of developing Type 2 diabetes.  <\/p>\n\n\n\n

12.  Improves mood.<\/strong> Grab your earphones or ear buds and start walking around your neighborhood to take a break from the hassles of life. We all need a break from our kids, loved ones, work and daily responsibilities. Take 30 minutes and walk to clear your head, breathe the fresh air and you may find yourself come back invigorated and ready to tackle the next challenges the day will bring.<\/p>\n\n\n

14.  Helps maintain strong bones.<\/strong> Numerous studies have shown that regular weight bearing activities<\/a> help improve bone density and strength. As we age, we lose bone density. This rate increases with a sedentary lifestyle. Fight mother nature and keep those bones strong!<\/p>\n\n\n\n

15.  Reduces the risk of heart attack. <\/strong>The American Heart Association (Heart.org) provides literature on reducing the risk of heart attacks. Physical activity is one of the key components to a heart healthy lifestyle.   link<\/p>\n\n\n\n

16.  Less likely to lead to injuries. <\/strong>A regular walking routine will not only improve your circulation, it will also increase your muscle and bone strength leading to a lower risk of injuries with activities of daily living.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

17.  Reduces stress. <\/strong>Did you know that walking can promote the release of brain chemicals called endorphins that stimulate relaxation and improve our mood? Well, it does and how cool is that! Finding an enjoyable nature environment was shown to contribute to lowering stress<\/a>. As much as I enjoy walking in any setting around my neighborhood, I just love walking around Lake Eola<\/a> Park in Orlando, Florida where I can walk among the swans.  <\/p>\n\n\n\n

18.  Reduces risk of heart disease. <\/strong>The American Heart Association (AHA) recommends walking moderately for 150 minutes per week (or 30 minutes x 5 days) to reduce our risk of heart disease.
